About Carol

Carol and Rodney Sr. in the 1970s

Carol is survived by her loving husband, Rodney D. Chupp, Sr.; her daughter, Emilie Schechtman; her son, Rodney D. Chupp, Jr.; her granddaughter, Kendall Schechtman; and her sisters, Kathy Gracey and Judy Shirley.

Carol grew up in South Florida and lived most of her life there. When COVID came, she and Rod traded the Florida sun for the mountains of Hayesville, North Carolina — and she made a home there too, because that was just what she did.

For most of her life Carol was a homemaker, and she owned that title proudly. She'd tell you her real job was taking care of Emilie, Roddy, and Rod — and by any measure, she was exceptional at it. She also worked alongside Rod at several of his companies over the years, handling bookkeeping and accounts with the same quiet competence she brought to everything else.

Carol showed love through food, and the family will tell you no one did it better. Her spaghetti sauce and lasagna were legendary. Her carrot cake, coconut cake, and tiramisu came out for every birthday and holiday and never made it home in the dish. If she loved you, she made sure you knew it at the dinner table.

In her 40s, Carol was diagnosed with breast cancer — and she beat it. She went on to become a grandmother to Kendall, Emilie's daughter, whom she adored and shamelessly spoiled. Getting to be Kendall's grandmother was one of the great joys of her life.

In Lieu of Flowers

Carol fought breast cancer in her 40s and won. In her memory, the family asks that in lieu of flowers or a service gift, you consider a donation to Susan G. Komen to support the women still fighting this disease today.

From the Family

On September 19th, 1973, I married the most beautiful woman I had ever seen — and every day after that she proved me right. Fifty-three years wasn't enough. It never could have been. But if there's one number I'll carry with me for the rest of my life, it's that one. Fifty-three. Forever.

Mom shared her love in so many ways, especially through her cooking. I'll miss her smile, loving hugs and how happy it made her to care for others. Love you always mommy.

Carol and Emilie

Mom is the light of my life. The most beautiful, caring, and loving mother any son could ask for. She made my childhood carefree and without worry. Never once have I ever felt alone — no matter how far apart or close we lived from each other.
